At the battle arena, the Dark Tournament begins. The Urameshi team is against the Six Wandering Specters team, as Koto tells the teams they must agree on what kind of battles they want. Outside, Koenma arrives with Jorge, but he decides to change to his older form to stop Yusuke and Kuwabara making fun of him. He meets with Botan, Keiko and Shizuru, and they head inside the arena so they can watch the fight. Back in the ring, Zeru sends out some demonic flames to try and wake Yusuke up, but Yusuke remains asleep, prompting Zeru to think he is just an idiot after all.

The teams decide on one on one battles, and the first match has Kuwabara facing Rinku. The match begins and Rinku moves around at great speed, and lands the first attack. But Kuwabara is able to figure out where he is, and smacks him down a couple of times. Before Kuwabara can land his finishing strike, Rinku evades him and kicks him in the head, flooring him.

Kuwabara gets back up, so Rinku decides to use his devil yo-yos -yo-yos which he can control and power with his own demon energy. Kuwabara shows off his new move by creating two separate spirit swords at the same time, but Rinku reveals he can control his yo-yos and get them to move any way he wants. Kuwabara is unable to stop himself from getting hit, and Rinku then ties his yo-yos around his limbs and raises him high into the sky. He then pulls down on the strings, and Kuwabara is sent straight down towards the ring's floor, with seemingly no chance of escape...

Manga differences

-Sakyo and Gondawara seem to be out there with the rest of the audience in the manga, but in the anime the Black Black Club members have their own VIP room.

-Koenma is already in his older form when he arrives in the manga. The anime changed it by having him think about being mocked by Yusuke and Kuwabara, so he decides to change to his older form to stop them from making fun of him.

-Zeru does not send some flames at the spectators in the manga.

-In the manga, Kuwabara is the one to land the first attack. The anime changed it so Rinku manages to kick Kuwabara first.

-In the manga, Botan, Keiko, Shizuru and Atsuko walk in on the fight just as Kuwabara is lifted high into the air. In the anime, they get to see more of the fight -apart from Atsuko, who isn't present at all for this arc.

-Koenma stays with the ladies in the manga, but in the anime he and Jorge go off to a a VIP room. Koenma also changes back to his usual form (he'll keep switching forms throughout this arc), whilst in the manga he stays in his older form for the entire Dark Tournament.

-Atsuko makes a remark that if Kuwabara falls now, he's dead, and thinks this is too brutal. Koenma tells her that's the point. As Atsuko isn't here in the anime, this was cut.
